GET HELP

I lost my pet

⚠️Act quickly — the first 24 hours matter most. Follow these steps right now.

TAKE THESE STEPS IMMEDIATELY

What to do right now

1. Call your local animal control

Contact the animal control for your city right away and file a lost pet report. Okanogan County has no central animal control, so you'll need to call your city's office.  If you don't see your city listed, contact the Okanogan County Sheriff.

2. Post to online lost & found groups

Search both groups and post a photo and details as soon as possible. You can also try Petco Love Lost, which uses photo-matching technology to compare your pet against shelter databases. Additional places to post include PawBoost and Nextdoor.

When creating your post, include as much detail as possible:

  • A clear photo of your pet

  • Pet’s name

  • Breed, color, size/weight, and any identifying features

  • Date, time, and location where they were last seen

  • Whether they are microchipped

  • How they may react if approached (for example, if they are fearful or may run)

  • A phone number for people to call or text with sightings

Ask anyone who sees your pet to share details such as the direction they were traveling, the time and location of the sighting, and whether they were able to safely secure your pet.

3. Make & post flyers immediately

Include the same information your social post. Most pets are found within a 1 to 2-mile radius of where they escaped. For dogs, post large, neon signs within a 2 to 3-mile radius in all directions, focusing on major intersections and stop signs. For cats, keep the radius much smaller, usually within a 2 to 3-block

4. Call all nearby veterinary clinics

5. Don't give up — keep searching

Pets have been reunited with their owners months or even years after going missing. Keep checking in with local groups and revisiting the area. Some pets hide nearby for days before emerging.

Scam Alert

Scammers target pet owners searching for lost pets. Never pay large sums of money to someone claiming to have your pet, and never respond to strangers asking you to wire money. If something feels off, hang up and call animal control directly.
