GET HELP

I can't keep my pet

We understand life circumstances change. Let's find the best path for you and your animal.

If you're considering surrendering your pet because you're struggling to afford food or veterinary care, please call TOAR before making that decision. We may be able to help.

Whenever possible, our goal is to keep pets with the families who love them.
Through pet food assistance and access to resources for veterinary care, we're here to support you during difficult times.

You don't have to face it alone—reach out to TOAR and let's see how we can help.

Options for rehoming or surrender

1. Reach out to TOAR if your considering surrender due to financial reasons.

If you're considering surrender due to cost of care or food, TOAR may be able to help! We offer free pet food, free spay/neuter clinics, and emergency vet funding. Contact us before surrendering. TOAR doesn't operate a shelter but can help connect you with rescue partners and transport options. Email info@toarwa.org with your pet's details.

2. Try to rehome directly first

No one knows your pet better than you. As their owner, you understand their personality, likes and dislikes, routines, and what kind of home will help them thrive. Because of that, you are often in the best position to find the right match for your pet.

By making every effort to rehome your pet yourself, you're not only giving them the best chance at a successful transition—you’re also helping another animal in need. Every pet that finds a home without entering a shelter leaves space and resources available for an animal with nowhere else to go. Be honest about your pet's personality and needs.  Additionally, you will want to provide all past veterinary records, including proof of spay/neuter status and vaccinations with your animal.

Ways to re-home your pet on your own:

  • Ask local veterinarians if you can post signs in their clinics

  • Ask local pet-related businesses if you can post signs in their stores

  • Place an ad in the paper and online.

  • Many shelters and rescues offer home to home placement

3. Contact Spokane Humane Society or Wenatchee Valley Humane Society

Both the Spokane Humane Society and the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society may be able to assist you. Please contact them directly to learn about their surrender process, availability, and how they may be able to help. Their contact information is provided below.

4. Contact your city animal control

If no other options are available, your local animal control can advise on surrender options. Note: Okanogan County has no publicly-funded shelter, so options are limited. See contacts below.
