I FOUND A STRAY

Most found animals are owned pets, often within a mile of home. Here's what to do.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FIND A STRAY

1. Check for ID tags or a microchip

Look for a collar and tags. Take the animal to any vet clinic to be scanned for a microchip — this is free at most clinics.

2. Post in local Facebook lost & found groups

Post clear photos in Okanogan County lost & found groups. Also post on Petco Love Lost (found pet report) and PawBoost  and Nextdoor so the owner can find you.

When creating your post, include as much detail as possible:

  • A picture

  • Pet’s name if it is on a tag

  • Breed, color, size/weight, and any identifying features

  • Date, time, and location where they were found

  • A phone number for people to call or text you

3. Call you local animal control

Contact the animal control for your city right away and file a lost pet report. See the contacts below — Okanogan County has no central animal control, so you'll need to call your city's office

4. If you can't keep the animal temporarily

Email info@toarwa.org. We can help connect you with temporary care options while you search for the owner.

5. Make & post flyers immediately

Post "FOUND PET" flyers within a 1-mile radius of where you found the animal. The owner is likely very close by and searching.
